Mothers In The Workplace
Are you wanting to find ways to support the women in your workplace as they navigate:
working while pregnant,
are returning from maternity leave, or
is a seasoned mother who is struggling with finding balance in her professional life and motherhood?
Women are a force to be reckoned with—we can do hard things. But the truth is, we are often set up to fail in a system that was never designed with a mother’s reality in mind.
For the high-achieving woman, entering the workplace after becoming a mother often triggers what we call the "Inner Split." This is the painful tension between the competent, linear professional you have always been and the "Perfect Mother" society expects you to be. It is a divided self—where you feel you are never doing "enough" in the boardroom or the playroom.
The Reality of the Mental Load
Working mothers spend nearly a third of their lives at work, yet they continue to shoulder the majority of unpaid labor at home. In today’s world, the invisible mental load is overwhelming. Motherhood has become a social construct that demands you build a successful career and contribute financially, all while raising the next generation with unwavering, 24/7 devotion.
The Science of the Working Mother
Research in Matrescence shows that this transition actually makes high-achieving women more attuned to their environment. This heightened sensitivity is a neurobiological superpower for leadership, yet it also makes mothers more susceptible to feeling deeply undervalued when their workplace fails to acknowledge their new reality. When a system ignores the "Invisible Backpack" a mother carries, it doesn't just lose her productivity—it loses her brilliance.
A New Way Forward
For mothers to thrive in the workplace, they need more than "flexibility"; they need a cultural revolution. They need employers, colleagues, and communities to recognize that the skills gained in matrescence—efficiency, empathy, and complex problem-solving—are corporate assets.
I work with organizations and individual mothers to bridge this gap, turning the "Inner Split" into an integrated, empowered whole.
